Morpeth 2nds Continue Their Run Of Form
Morpeth 2's took to the pitch at Coach Lane full of confidence following an excellent post-Christmas run of form.
For some of the older members of the squad, it was a return to a venue that has provided many emotional scenes over the years and this was surely going to be another hard fought battle to the final whistle.
It was evident from the start that the boys from Morpeth meant business and were not going to allow a young University team have all the fun. A clear game plan was set by captain Malecki who had full confidence in his band of merry men and controlled the game solidly from the back. The strong defensive line absorbed any attacks from the University but soon the stalemate was broken by some excellent play allowing Gavin Minty to calmly stroll the ball past the flailing keeper. 1-0 Morpeth. The first half continued in much in the same way with keeper Jackson only being tested on a couple of occasions.
The attacking play proved dominant and the forwards continued to pile on the pressure resulting in further goals from Tordoff and Danecki. Unfortunately a scrappy short corner from the University resulted them in cutting the deficit by 1. Half time, Morpeth 3-Newcastle 1.
The second half started much in the same way as the first but soon it became evident that the University had found their form and it was now the defence and midfield who would be put to the test. Strong play from Mclean, Malecki, James and Hinshaw cut out any threats allowing the midfield of Sanders, James, Shafiq and Chambers to spread the play and regain control of the game.
A goalless second half resulted in another 3 points for Morpeth who now will be sitting high in the table with the possibility of promotion firmly within grasp.
A great team effort should be recognised but special mentions must be made to Jackson for some solid saves, Mclean for his two goal mouth clearances and ultimately Sanders who was rewarded with Man of the Match.
In the second game of the weekend, Morpeth face Hild Bede at Longhirst on Sunday 15th.
